Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is Uganda's smallest national park but offers one of the most scenic mountain gorilla trekking experiences in Africa.

The park lies within the Virunga Mountain range near the borders of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is characterised by dramatic volcanic scenery, bamboo forests, and fewer tourist crowds compared with Bwindi.

Gorilla trekking in Uganda

Gorilla trekking in Uganda is one of Africa's most rewarding wildlife adventures. The experience begins early in the morning with a briefing from Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers before visitors head into the rainforest in guided groups.

Trackers move ahead through the jungle searching for signs of gorilla movement while guides lead travellers along forest trails, bamboo vegetation, steep slopes and muddy terrain.

The trek can last anywhere from one hour to several hours, depending on the location of the gorilla family being tracked.

The moment travellers finally encounter a mountain gorilla family in the wild is unforgettable. Visitors are allowed one hour observing the gorillas while maintaining a safe distance.

Mountain gorilla trekking in Uganda is possible throughout the year, but the dry seasons are generally considered the best time for trekking.
